The number of pre-university colleges in the state may go up this academic year. The state department of pre-university education (PUE) has received about 250 applications to open PU colleges for the academic year 2011-12 and most of these proposals are getting speedy approval.

According to sources in the PUE department, primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri has already cleared files concerning the new colleges.

“The minister has signed the files. In the first phase, about 170 colleges have been permitted to start courses this year,” said a source.

By next week, some more colleges will get the nod. All the applications received and the 170 that have secured the minister’s permission are private institutions. “There are no proposals from the government for new PU colleges this year. Enough number of government PU colleges had started in past two years, so we decided not to open any new government PU college this year,” said an official from the department.

As per the information available, the highest number of applications were received from Bangalore zone.

“Out of 250, more than 150 applications were from Bangalore zone, followed by Dharwad. Permission has been given based on requirement in that area and at least one college has been permitted to each district,” he said. This year, the pass percentage of Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations saw a record improvement with 6,32,184  out of the 8,55,474 candidates clearing the exams.

“To cater to this huge number of students, we need more colleges because most existing colleges will not entertain the second- and pass-class students. Students who clear supplementary exams too need to be accommodated,” said the official.
