The judicial probe ordered into the alleged multi-crore land scam was on Tuesday criticised by the state Lokayukta and the opposition Janata Dal (Secular).

While the Lokayukta, justice N Santosh Hegde, questioned the need for a parallel investigation into the scam, the JD(S) said it would not cooperate with the probe.

The Lokayukta has already taken up a probe into the scam at the administrative level, following a complaint by YSV Dutta, spokesperson of the JD(S).

Along with the complaint, Dutta had submitted documents running into more than 500 pages. He alleged that chief minister BS Yeddyurappa was involved in the Rs5,000-crore land scam.

The Lokayukta has been waiting for reports to decide on sections under which the cases could be booked, when the state cabinet ordered the judicial probe.

The government had on Monday issued the notification for a judicial enquiry into all denotification scams in the state as well as irregularities in allocation of sites through the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and other civic bodies since January 1, 1995. “I am upset over the parallel judicial probe being carried out, while my team has already started the investigation,” said justice Hegde.

The government has appointed retired judge of the high court justice B Padmaraj to head probe panel, mandated to submit its report within a year.

Meanwhile, the JD(S) has decided to boycott the judicial probe ordered by the government into land scams. Party leaders MC Nanaiah and HD Revanna said the decision was just an ‘eye wash’.

“The judicial probe will not serve any purpose. It may take one year for collecting information and at least three years for submitting its interim report,” Nanaiah said.

The JD(S) demanded the government to withdraw the judicial probe and hand over the investigation to the Lokayukta.
