Residents of Kengeri Satellite Town (KST) have managed to close down a liquor shop that came up in a residential area on 80 Feet Road, II Stage in the locality.

Their widespread protests exposed the error committed by approving a licence to the shop located 39 m from a pre-nursery school.

The shop owner is alleged to be running two outlets with a single licence. MS Manjunath, a resident, said the shop owner, CM Ramachandra had tried to run two liquor shops in Mathikere and KST though he had sought the transfer of the shop from one locality to the other.

The residents brought the issue to the notice of various authorities through their protest on December 2 before the departments of revenue, police and excise.

The excise commissioner realised the mistake and on January 13 ordered the closure of the shop in KST following widespread protest by the residents.

“On filing the application by the licence holder, the excise range inspector was asked to conduct spot inspection and submit a report. The excise inspector of Kengeri range reported that there were no objections and recommended shifting the liquor shop to the proposed place in KST. After the shop commenced the business in KST, various organisations like Kizee, a school, Sri Raghavendra Seva Samithi and Bhanu Vidya Samsthe objected to its opening,” the order said.

The deputy superintendent of excise asked the licence holder to shift the store to an alternative area.

The order also noted that the report submitted by officials of the excise department had revealed that the liquor shop was located in a residential area which housed commercial shops and that a pre-nursery school was situated near the store.

“We have found that men in inebriated state were behaving violently and were often indecent at the place where women used to pick up their children from school,” said KC Satish, another resident.
