With the elections for the State Bar Council set to begin on June 9, legal eagles have unleashed ingenious means to lure voters throughout the state.

Candidates have hit the roads, travelling across the state to various bar associations, fulfiling the demands of the small bar associations, wooing advocates, who are voters in these elections with alcohol, grand dinner and much more. Lakhs of rupees are being spent, to meet the demands of peers and bar associations.

A total of 96 candidates are contesting the elections in the state this time. Campaigning started four months ago. Many candidates have already toured the entire 183 bar associations across the state, seeking votes. Many have already fulfiled demands like providing water filters, TVs and libraries for the smaller bar associations.

One associate of a candidate, busy campaigning, said that many candidates have contributed large sums of money to the smaller bar associations in a bid to win votes.

Many candidates have also arranged lavish parties at the bar associations. Sources indicate that voters are divided into caste groups, and caste will take priority as a consideration when it comes to casting the vote. In the past, the contest had also attained party hues.

The BJP is reportedly supporting at least 12 candidates, while even the JD(S) is supporting a few candidates.
Speaking to DNA, Sadashiv Reddy, former chairman of the Bar Council, said that each contesting candidate has spent at least Rs5 lakh this time. This amount does not include what might have been spent on providing supporters food and fancy accommodation.

Advocates from across the state will cast their votes for 25 members who will comprise the State Bar Council. The election is set to begin on June 9, and will continue across the state for 25 days. After this process, elections to chairman and vice chairman of the State Bar Council, and one representative to the Bar Council of India will also be held.

The elections for the chairman, vice chairman and the representative to the Bar Council of India will be through casting of votes from among the 25 members.
