The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission has asked the government to pay Rs1 lakh as compensation within a month for the injustice meted out to Priyanka, an MBA student on account of negligence by investigating officers.

Almost a year ago, Priyanka had alleged that her boyfriend, after impregnating her, had gone ahead to marry another woman.

“The fact that the case was withdrawn from Nandini Layout police station and transferred to RMC Yard police station proves that there was improper investigation in the case by sub-inspector Kemparaju and inspector Chandru. There was negligence and inaction on the part of these officers in dealing with Priyanka’s complaint. Though the media highlighted the incident, these officials never cared to take action or prevent the marriage. These officers should be made accountable for their negligence and inaction,” said commission chairperson SR Nayak.

Apart from the Rs1 lakh compensation, the commission also recommended the government to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Kemparaju and Chandru in accordance with the service rules after placing them under suspension pending enquiry.

Priyanka had lodged the complaint on October 5, 2009 after she came to know that her boyfriend Anand was getting married to another woman. The marriage was scheduled to take place on November 14, 2009.

Sub-inspector Keparaju had directed ASI Ramaiah to register the complaint as a miscellaneous, but nothing was done in the case.

On October 30, Priyanka lodged another complaint with inspector Chandru. Even complaints lodged with the commissioner and ACP GT Ajappa went in vain.  With no other options left, Priyanka barged into the wedding hall where Anand was getting married, but was beaten up by the crowd.

Later on November 14, Priyanka petitioned the commissioner of police. On December 1, Anil Naik, a human rights activist, submitted a representation to the KSHRC.
