The state legislative council witnessed an exchange of words between the ruling party and the opposition on Friday for almost two-and-a-half hours.

Trouble started when the opposition Congress requested the speaker for permission to move an adjournment motion on the recent Supreme Court ruling quashing the disqualification of 16 MLAs.

This sparked noisy arguments between the members of both parties. Explaining the reason behind the adjournment motion, VR Sudarshan, Congress MLC, said the BJP government was a curse for the people of the state.

This sweeping comment led to pandemonium in the council. When peace returned, VS Acharya, leader of the ruling party, rose to explain why the ruling party did not want the adjournment motion to be placed.

Describing Congress members as sinners, Acharya said, “Congress did not even allow us enjoy the success of the recent by lections. Within a few hours after the results were out, they started troubling us through the governor. They are really sinners (paapigalu).”

This triggered an uproar as Congress members objected to the use of the word ‘sinners’ and demanded the minister to take back the word. As opposition mounted, Acharya agreed to take back the word. “The word is not mine. That is what people are taking about the Congress,” he said.

Chairman of the house DH Shankar Murthy refused permission for discussion on the issue.
