Ahead of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking June 26, the Karnataka State Temperance Board (KSTB) on Monday launched a 10-day campaign against the use of narcotics and alcohol among youngsters in Karnataka.

Special events will be conducted at various schools and colleges around the state educating youngsters about the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol.

The programme was launched at the Shikshakara Sadan with public figures like Sandalwood actor Pooja Gandhi, education minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri, DGP (Fire Force & Home Guards) DV Guruprasad and MLA Dinesh Gundurao present to support the campaign.

Addressing youngsters and teachers, KSTB chairman Sachitananda Hegde said, “It’s sad to see the huge number of youngsters getting addicted to drugs. It affects them in a negative way. It is important to instil good values in them at a young age. Hence, having well-trained teachers is very important.”

The education minister was overwhelmed by the turnout of college students at the event. He said, “If educated well, every child will grow up to be a responsible and well-cultured citizen. To wipe off this ill habit, I am supporting this campaign; we must make use of these 10 days and spread the message to all the youngsters around the state.”

Kageri said that the government was planning to visit hundreds of schools and colleges and educate the youth.

Actor Pooja Gandhi was present at the launch of the event to show her support for the noble cause. “I am here today not as an actor, but as the brand ambassador of AIDS Awareness Society and Rehabilitation for Sex Workers. I have seen people getting addicted and undergoing emotional stress. It is really sad to know that a number of youngsters get into substance abuse at a very young age. Most of the time it’s because of peer pressure. All of us should support this campaign, as each one of us can make a difference to the society.”

Guruprasad also spoke for the noble cause and shared a few experiences with the crowd. “The use of drugs spreads HIV; 40%-50% of drug users end up committing a crime. We, as a society, should help eradicate this nuisance,” he said.

Dr Pratima Murthy educated the crowd about the ill effects of drugs and alcohol on a person’s physical as well as emotional health.
According to a recent survey, 15-20 lakh youngsters get addicted to drugs and alcohol every year.
