Expressing disappointment over the Karnataka high court verdict upholding the disqualification of five independent MLAs, the opposition Congress and JD(S) have expressed their solidarity with the former legislators.

State JD(S) president and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said, “We expected this kind of verdict from the high court. The law and parliamentary affairs minister had openly said in Shimoga two days back that the ruling party will definitely win the case of the five disqualified independent MLAs. This shows that something fishy has happened. The high court has not rendered justice to the five independents. The verdict needs to be questioned.”

Kumaraswamy denied allegations that he had misled the independent MLAs to doom.

“I had not misled the five independent MLAs. They voluntarily came out from the BJP camp and openly declared that they will not support chief minister BS Yeddyurappa. I hope they will get justice in the apex court,” he added.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwar said, “The high court has not done justice for independent MLAs. The speaker’s decision on the disqualification of the five independent MLAs is not valid. The court should review its order.”

After the verdict was pronounced, the five independents, Goolihatti Shekar, Venkataramanappa, D Sudhakar, PM Narendraswamy and Shivaraj Thangadagi, held a meeting and decided to challenge the high court order in the apex court.

“Monday is a Black Day for us. We hoped that the verdict would be in our favour. But the high court has not considered our views. But we hope that the apex court will give justice for us. We have lost the battle, but we will win the war,” said Narendraswamy.
