The deadlock in the Karnataka state assembly continued on Wednesday as the opposition demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the affairs of the Prerana Education Trust run by chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s sons.

The trust allegedly received large sums in donation from Adarsh Developers and Jindal Steel, in quid pro quo arrangements. The chief minister, however, dismissed the allegations and declined the opposition demand.

In the midst of the din, the assembly passed 15 bills in a matter of 20 minutes without any debate.

Among the bills passed were the Karnataka Regulation and Control of Stone Crushers Bill, Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation, Admission and Fixation of fees) (special provisions) Bill  and the Karnataka Government Parks (Amendment ) Bill.

House adjourned sine die
After passing the bills, speaker KG Bopaiah adjourned the house sine die. Opposition members, relentless in their demand for a probe into the affairs of the Prerana Trust, did not allow the speaker to take up the question hour.

Dismissing the allegations, chief minister BS Yeddyurappa said, “I have already clarified that I have not shown any favour to either Jindal Steel or Adarsha Developers. Opposition allegations are baseless. Prerana Trust is a public trust and all its documents are in order. The opposition has failed to produce any evidence to prove that any favour was granted to Jindal Steel or Adarsha Developers. The question of  a CBI probe does not arise.”

“I will complete my term as the chief minister of Karnataka. If the opposition dreams of coming to power, they should know that it is not possible in the near future,”he said.

Participatng in the debate opposition leader Siddramaiah, said,  “On Monday, chief minister said that he was ready to face any enquiry. Now, he says that there is no need for an enquiry.”

“If he is not guilty, why is he afraid? And without any benefit to the company, why would `40 crore be donated to an education trust?” he asked.

As the dharna continued, the speaker was left with little option but to adjourn the house.

After adjourning the house twice, when it met again in the evening, 15 bills were passed.
