The Karnatakastate government on Tuesday has undertaken before the high court to initiate action against all those who violate the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifice Act 1959. The court was hearing a petition claiming that religious institutions are still conducting animal sacrifices in the state.

It may be recalled that the Akhila Karnataka Prani Daya Sangha had filed a petition in the high court in 2005, saying that many Hindu and the Muslim religious institutions in the state still conducted animal sacrifice.

This should be prevented as per the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifice Act 1959, the petitioners contended. The petitioners specifically pointed out to institutions like the Durgamba temple at Kustagi taluk and Kapadi institution in Mandya, where animal sacrifices are done.

The high court on June 28 directed the state government to file a report on July 12, on the action taken against animal sacrifices.
The case came up for hearing on Tuesday before the division bench headed by chief justice JS Khehar and justice HG Ramesh.

The state government undertook to see that action will be taken against all those who violate Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifice Act 1959.

Thereafter, the bench dismissed the case.
