The confrontation between governor HR Bhardwaj and chief minister BS Yeddyurappa has reached a flashpoint with BJP’s high command fully backing the latter’s decision to take on the governor head-on.

This is part of BJP’s strategy to pre-empt Bhardwaj’s move to permit Yeddyurappa’s prosecution over the alleged land scams in the state.

Yeddyurappa, who rushed to Delhi on Tuesday amid reports of the governor’s impending decision to accede to the request of two advocates, Sirajin Basha and KN Balraj,  to prosecute Yeddyurappa for alleged land scams, has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting on Wednesday – the second in the 24 hours.

Yeddyurappa met Arun Jaitley and other BJP national leaders in Delhi and discussed about BJP’s stand on his continuance as CM in the event of Bhardwaj permitting his prosecution.

The party leadership has assured Yeddyurappa that he will not be asked to step down even if Bhardwaj gives the nod for his prosecution.

Sources said BJP national leadership’s support to Yeddyurappa came after consulting legal luminary Ram Jethmalani. The party leadership also decided to meet President Pratibha Patil on January 24 to push for recalling the governor. The party has prepared an exhaustive complaint highlighting the alleged acts of political bias against the BJP government since he entered Raj Bhavan in Bangalore.

Assured of support from the party high command, Yeddyurappa called for an emergency Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to fine tune a strategy to turn any aggressive moves by the governor to his party’s advantage.

Party insiders said a one line resolution to demand Bhardwaj’s recall would be adopted at the Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting which would later be submitted to President on January 24.

“There is no question of bowing to governor’s threats. We accept this political challenge. We have extensive documents to prove that the two lawyers who have sought governor’s permission for prosecuting the chief minister are being sponsored by Congress. All such evidence will be placed before the President to make a strong demand for Bhardwaj’s recall,” a senior BJP leader told DNA.
