Planting trees as part of philanthropic activity is very common in the city. Many citizens have taken to saving the environment of this rapidly urbanising city as part of social work. Environmentalists have tried different ways to make up for deforestation.

One such method is the new Japanese way of planting trees to make the city environment-friendly. Since Japan is a technological hub and has more buildings and less greenery, they decided to plant as many trees as possible in vacant spaces lying in disuse. This helped in making the cities more nature friendly.

Environmentalists and corporates have taken up similar initiatives to make the city green and restore its waning ‘Garden City’ tag.

The name given to these spaces is “Urban Jungles” and there are many in the city. They can be seen in areas like HAL, Adugodi, Sarjapura and CV Raman Nagar. Companies like Cisco, Microsoft and Intel have been creating many urban jungles as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. NGO’s such as Youth for Service, Afforest and Samarthanam are among the main supporters of this initiative.

To accommodate several saplings in one area, the roots of these young plants are carefully twisted before being placed in the soil. This allows breathing space for the plants and the roots would not occupy too much space as the trees grow.
