At a time when the world is grappling with energy crisis and large-scale carbon emission, two students of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) have designed a software which helps computer users to adopt power management and save unnecessary wastage of electricity.

Designed by Om Prakash H and Srikanth R, BillionWatt Power Manager helps users to automatically put their computers and laptops on either sleep or hibernation mode, when not in use. A good amount of energy could be saved and data of computer users remains safe. Moreover, large amount of carbon dioxide emission could be also prevented. The duo has also created a website www.billionwatt.com, where the free-of-cost software is available.

The IIMB students took about six months to come up with the software. “Call it our ignorance or laziness, most often, we don’t switch off our computers as we go out for our tea, coffee, snacks or lunch breaks. Moreover, it has been observed that many employees go home from office without shutting down their systems. Keeping these things in mind, we have designed the software to prevent wastage of electricity,” said Prakash, a second year student of post-graduate programme (PGP) in management.

“The software has the ability to automatically reduce power consumption of the system, based on the software settings and also highlight the amount of savings in power and reduction in carbon emissions the user has managed to achieve since the software was installed,” said Srikanth, also a second year PGP student at IIMB.

The data available with International Energy Agency states that generation of electricity is the most significant contributor to carbon emissions. Currently, there are over 1 billion computers in the world, and the number is growing daily.

“It is estimated that computers consume approximately 5% of world’s electricity. This is not a small amount. So, power management in computers can definitely save significant amount of power. Moreover, computers are not usually operated round the clock, and it is during those idle times, like tea/coffee/snacks/ lunch breaks, conference calls, meeting with friends, and catching up movies, when significant savings of power can be achieved,” said Srikanth, an electrical engineering graduate.

Prakash said that annually, a single person who uses a desktop computer consumes about 1,000 units of electricity, releases about 900 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere. A person using a laptop computer consumes about 300 units of electricity and releases about 270 kg of CO2.

The software also provides an attractive one-click internet search facility. Explaining how the search facility works, Prakash, who is a computer engineering graduate, said, “Just by clicking on the software’s image on screen, a neat search bar is provided, one has to just type their search term and the results are provided in a browser. Thus users don’t even have to launch their browser and type the URL of the search engine.”
