Ever wondered where that sound of thunder came from, as you were on the road? Most likely, it was a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Hollywood action flicks regularly feature these dream machines. Ever since April, the bike has been available in Bangalore too. And as one of these machines goes down the road, many envious eyes follow it.

Gautham Rao, owner of a Harley Davidson Iron 883, says, “People strike up a conversation about the bike, and are curious about the mileage and price. But there’s really no comparison to a Harley Davidson. It is durable and reliable. The endurance of these bikes is extraordinary. Most of the bike parts are handcrafted in the Harley Davidson plant in USA, and brought to India for assembly.”

The proud owner claimed that the bikes were not meant to go fast; they are more renowned for endurance, for long journeys and wayfaring. “The Harleys are like much larger versions of the Royal Enfield. I get a decent mileage of 21 km per litre on the highway and around 17 km per litre in the city,” Rao says.

The Harley Davidson showroom in the city is located on Lavelle Road. Many gather just to stand and stare. Some even go inside, to see the bikes up close. One visitor said the very sight was enough to make him faint. “I have been watching Hollywood biggies riding the Harleys, and I’ve made up my mind that this is my dream bike, my future bike,” said one visitor to the showroom.

The Harley Davidsons come in different varieties. Sportsters are smaller, zippier and lighter than the other Harleys. Then there is the Soft-tail, so called because of the rear suspension, which is nicely hidden. The Dyna has a classic look, and gleams in the darkness. There are also specially designed long-distance bikes; the VRSC bikes have a unique 60 degree V-engine which churns out more BHP and torque.

Hugh Jackson D’Souza, a fan of the Harley Davidson, who saw a Harley Davidson Iron 883 with a ‘screamin’ eagle’ performance exhaust pass by, said, “When the Harley is stationary, the engine runs to the tempo of the heartbeat. When it starts moving, your heart races to keep up with the tempo of the engine.”

Even though it is only a few months since the bike has hit city roads, there is a palpable enthusiasm about this new addition to Bangalore’s streets.
