As many as 87 foreign students studying in the city have been evicted from the country owing to their involvement in criminal activities, home minister R Ashoka informed the council on Monday.

He was responding to a query of MLC Mohan A Limbikavi, who raised the issue of foreign students’ role in crime in the city and steps taken to put an end to it. Ashoka said in the recent past, foreign students were involved in 62 crime cases and the police had registered 44 cases in this regard. He said 26 cases are under investigation and 18 are pending before the court.

The home minister added that most cases of crime involving foreign students are of non-serious nature, such as discrepancy in documents and passport violations. He said some students were involved in violence and even roughing up policemen. Four cases were related to the students’ involvement in selling drugs.

He said a few students from Nigeria, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq have committed offences in the city.

Ashoka said the home department is monitoring the foreign students by getting in touch with college managements. He said the department had clear information about the visa validity of the students.

MLC Krishna Bhat spoke about how the police and different agencies were exploiting the foreign students and asked the government to take remedial measures. Ashoka assured him of taking action and said an office dedicated to look into the issue has already been working on the premises of the office of city police commissioner.

Commando force
Further, Ashoka informed the council that a brigadier was training the commando force in Bangalore, on par with NSG commandos, to react to any hostile situation. He added that the Centre had sent only a para-military regiment of 50 soldiers though the chief minister had requested for NSG commandos.

He said after the terror attack, Indian Institute of Science had been provided with tight security. About 59 Central government security officers and 260 private security guards maintain vigil on IISc premises round the clock. Local police also take up regular patrolling on the campus.
