A 16-year-old girl on Thursday attempted suicide, a day after escaping a kidnap attempt by two former classmates, one of whom wanted her as wife for a day.

The PUC student consumed poison at her house in Hommadevanahalli, and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where her father has been working. She was later shifted to the intensive care unit of Vani Vilas Hospital.

The girl, studying in a private college on KR College, was walking home with her 13-year-old brother when her high school classmates confronted her Hommadevanahalli near CK Palya on Bannerghatta Road. They wanted her to give them company for a day.

The girl refused. One of the boys pulled out a mangalsutra from his pocket, saying they could be man and wife for a day. The girl resisted, and the boys started dragging her to a waiting autorickshaw. She fought hard and fell on the road.

Meanwhile, hearing the screams, residents and passersby gathered at the scene and chased the boys away.

The scared siblings reached home around 5.30 pm and the girl narrated the entire incident to her mother.

On Thursday morning, her father reportedly reprimanded for not informing him about the boys teasing her. She later locked herself up in a room.

When she did not respond to repeated knocks, her mother sought their neighbours’ help to open the door. They found her unconscious on the floor.

She was rushed to the nearby private hospital where her father Madhusoodan has been working. She was administered first aid and around noon, transferred to Vani Vilas in a critical condition.

The girl had consumed Baygon Spray, an insecticide, doctors said. “Till Wednesday, we were unaware of the boys teasing her. If we were aware of it, something could have been done. But, the police will now look into the matter to bring justice to us,”
Madhusoodan said.

The Hulimavu police registered a case of criminal miscellaneous (petty case) following Madhusoodan’s complaint. Statements of her parents, brother and some witnesses were recorded.
“We are waiting for the victim to regain consciousness,” inspector Balaramegowda said, adding that the boys have been absconding after the incident.
