The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), as part of its initiative to keep the city green, has decided to bring in a reform by decentralising garbage disposal. The BBMP council meeting, to be held on October 29, is likely to finalise setting up of garbage converter units in all its 198 wards for preparing manure.

According to the BBMP taxation and finance committee chairman, PM Sadashiva, the proposal for setting up compost unit in each ward will be mooted in the council meeting.

“Initially, we are thinking of setting up the compost units in assembly constituencies. Later, we will take up the work in each ward according to the feasibility of the land available. We will set up 10 to 15 garbage converter units wherever land is available. We will prepare the garbage into compost, similar to what is being done in Malleshwaram,” he said.

He said that the garbage collecting contractor will have less work, as he can dispose it in the same ward or assembly constituency.

“We are not setting up the units in residential places as people may object. Since we require only 60x40 sq ft land to set up each unit, we will set them up near parks, commercial places and city outskirts. In core areas, we will identify Palike lands for setting up the units,” Sadashiva said.

Civic expert, V Ravinchandar said BBMP’s proposal to decentralise garbage units is a welcome move. “However, in the past, BBMP had made the same proposal, but didn’t succeed. First, it should demarcate or specify the land where they are planning to set up the units. It should identify the land and then announce their projects. Second, it should receive cooperation from the public by consulting the residents’ welfare associations,” he said.
