Within 24 hours of the steep hike in the diesel, kerosene and LPG prices, widespread inflation is looking to slap Bangaloreans in their face.

Starting with a cup of coffee or tea at your nearest chaiwala or a breakfast in the restaurant and then the bus transport fare, many things are set to go for a hike in the coming days. There would also be an impact on the prices of grocery, vegetables, milk and the other consumer products. DNA did a status check on various service and commodities that are set to be dearer for Bangalorens, thanks to the cascading effects of the hike in fuel prices.

Diesel being the fuel for the transport sector, the hike will directly affect the price of every possible commodity — be it grocery, vegetables or milk. All India Motor Transport Corporation (AIMTC) president GR Shanmugappa said he would hold meeting of office-bearers on Monday to discuss the future course of action. “We will definitely renegotiate on our old contracts. We are also thinking on a state-wide protest against the hike in the diesel prices,” he said.

Shanmugappa said diesel price hike would affect the cost of everything from vegetables and fruits to wood and sand and other commodities because the transportation cost would go up. “Every truckers’ association in the country would be affected and what about the 16 crore people who drive these trucks for a living. How will they survive if the government hikes fuel prices every two months?” he said.

He said the hike, along with the revised user fee for highways, will not just be a burden but will lead to a dwindling effect on a lot of systems in the society.

The hike in fuel price is also set to impact transportation prices of Hopcoms.

Hopcoms managing director KM Parashivamurthy, however, said it was too early to predict the impact of fuel price hike on vegetables. “On Saturday itself, there was a slight increase in vegetable prices in retail outlets. Vendors are expecting 8-10% rise in vegetable prices. The prices of fruits like apple, wood apple, moosambi, pear, peach, etc might go up by 10%,” he added.

“The price of meat is also set to go up. Items like fish, which is being transported from the coastal region is set to increase too. Already, there is an increase by at least 10% in the market,” said a meat merchant from Vijayanagar market.

Milk is also set to become dearer with the hike in transportation price to the KMF.

KMF president G Somashekhar Reddy said that the price rise would affect suppliers, which means the federation needs to have a re-look at the contractors who are providing transportation facility. “Once contracts are revised, we do not have any option but to shift the burden on to the customers. I will not rule out the possibility of increase in the prices of milk and milk products,” he said.
