The Kempegowda awards,  which was presented after a gap of four years, has become more controversial with M Nagaraj, opposition leader in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), on Tuesday alleging that four members of a family received the fete, though they did not contribute anything to the society.

Addressing a press meet, Nagaraj alleged that B Subramanya, the personal assistant of ruling party leader BS Satyanarayana, had recommended his family members for the award. “Vasudev Adiga and Shankara Narayan are Subramanya’s brothers-in-law, Rama Adiga is the wife of Vasudev Adiga and Kumari Hiranmayi is Subramanya’s daughter,” said Nagaraj.

He said that there were 150 awardees, including the name of Hiranmayi, in the signed list copy till the time he was in the selection committee. “I don’t know when the names of other three members of Subramanya’s family were included. Once they decided to add more names to the list without considering their achievements, I decided to quit the selection committee,” said Nagaraj.

He said he had recommended only eight persons for the award. “If any person proves that the persons recommended by me were unfit, then I am ready to resign from my post,” he said.
He said the ruling party had disrespected Kempegowda and made a mockery of the prestigious award. “The organisers kept on adding the names of the awardees till the last moment. There were no criteria for selecting the names,” he said, adding that 10% of the awardees did not deserve the fete.

Nagaraj also criticised BBMP for its mismanagement in the awards function. The awardees were lost in the crowd. The entire arrangement was very poor and the awardees were angered by the treatment meted out to them. Noted writer Hari Hara Priya called me up and was very upset with the arrangement,” he said.

Nagaraj said the award function should have been organised in Kanteerava Stadium, instead of BBMP headquarters. He said that even though the Palike had expected 3,000-4,000 people at the function, it erected a stage at Dr Rajkumar Glass House, opposite BBMP office. “Later it was shifted to BBMP office. When I asked why the function was not being held in the Glass House, engineers said that there will be echo inside the house. BBMP engineers are so incompetent that they cannot reduce the echo problem for a function,” he said.
