For census success, stay home

How can you contribute to the accuracy of the largest such exercise in the world, India’s 15th census? By staying at home.

That is what the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has suggested.

In a circular to all BBMP’s assistant revenue officers (AROs), who play a major role in the census process, BBMP commissioner Siddaiah has sought meetings with members of the residents’ welfare associations in the city to find ways to make the data collection process efficient.

Speaking to DNA, Siddaiah said that one of the major problems that census operations face in cities like Bangalore is the absence of residents when enumerators do the rounds. There is also, sometimes, reluctance to cooperate by providing the information necessary to fill forms.

“AROs will have meetings with residents’ welfare associations and apartment owners. A date and time will be set for census operations. Residents can be informed that they should stay at home and cooperate,” Siddaiah said, adding that at least one adult member of the family would be requested to stay home on the day scheduled for the census.

Such planning would enable the census exercise to be more accurate, and all the data could be gathered on one day, Siddaiah said. BBMP deputy commissioner (estates) Mujibulla Zafari said that the Palike would also appeal to the residents’ welfare associations to make sure that somebody from the family be present at home while the enumerator visits.

State director of census operations, TK Anil Kumar, had earlier commented that enumerators often find it difficult to gain access to homes within apartment blocks.
