An 18-year-old youth who had made successful forays on the football field, allegedly chose to end his life by consuming poison after failing in his II PU examination at his residence off Millers Road, Vasantnagar in High Grounds police limits.

Police identified the youth as M Manjunath, a student of Baldwin College, Richmond Town.

Manjunath came to know that he had managed to clear all subjects except Kannada when the results were announced on Thursday evening. The news that all his friends had cleared the exam while he alone had failed left him in despair. He consumed poison the next day in his house when he was alone.

Gopi, Manjunath’s cousin, came to his house on Friday and found him lying unconscious. He then rushed Manjunath to Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital. But, his cousin failed to respond to the treatment and breathed his last at 7.45 am on Sunday morning.
Manjunath’s father, Murthy, is working in a private security company. His mother works as a house maid, while brother Shabarish works as a salesman in a private company.

“We had pinned great hopes on Manjunath. He was a good sportsman, who had won many medals in his fledgeling career,” said Gopi.

One of the promising goalkeepers of the state under-19 football team, Manjunath played for the Sports Authority of India team in the local league. Manjunath was attending a preparatory camp for the BC Roy Junior National Championship, which was to be held in Kolkata next month, when his II PU exam results were announced with tragic consequences.

Manjunath was a standbye in the state’s team which won the previous edition of the BC Roy Trophy in Mandya a few months ago.
