Do something worthwhile for the environment and you will be rewarded, literally. The forest department is launching Parisar Prashisthe Yojna — awards for school and college students who will take initiative in boosting greenery in the state.

The awards will be given at the taluk, district and state levels. A committee has to be set up to inspect the work of each candidate and decide the winners.

At the taluk level, there are three awards worth Rs10,000, Rs5,000 and Rs2,500. At the district level, the winner will get Rs25,000, followed by the first and second runners-up with Rs10,000 and Rs5,000, respectively. At the state level, the awardees will get Rs50,000, Rs20,000 and Rs10,000.

The department has decided on handing over the awards on the occasion of Children’s Day on November 14. Another set of awards will also be given this year for citizens at the district and state level.

The sum of money awarded will be similar to Parisar Prashisthe Yojna. “The only difference between Parisar Prashisthe Yojna and this award will be that while in the former, students will get recognition, and the latter set of awards is for citizens across Karnataka,” said Probhash Chandra Ray, conservator of forest (development), Bangalore. The government recently approved both these schemes, he added.

The forest department has geared up to improve condition of endangered species and medicinal herbs.

This project got a green signal from the government and its objective is to formulate new schemes for protection and development of endangered species, many of which have medicinal value and are nearing extinction, said Ray.

The cost of this project has been pegged at ¤2 crore. Around 800 hectares have been allotted with ¤25,000 being attributed per hectare.

“The need now is to identify the species that will come under this category and then plan for extension programmes and regenerative studies,” added Ray.

Another 1,250 hectares have been allotted for ex-situ conservation in 50 locations across the state and  ¤3 crore has been allotted for this purpose.

Though at the planning stage, the project will be launched by July this year. The total requirement of funds is ¤10 crore, including ¤50 lakh as miscellaneous expenditure for consultation with various institutions, local-level workshop and training programme.
