Girish Karnad may be sweet on actress Hema Malini, but he disapproves of her as a politician. Daddi and buddi illa were the two words he has used to describe the dream girl who is to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and both mean the same — dud.

A renowned theatre person and Jnanpith award winner, Karnad called on all MLAs not to lend their support to such an “inefficient” candidate. Along with him, leading writers like Baragur Ramachandrappa, GK Govindaraju and Shoodra Srinivas launched a literary uprising on Saturday against the "outsider" and extended their full support to Independent candidate K Marulasiddappa, also a writer. In a unified voice, the writers appealed to the lawmakers to vote “according to their conscience” and not elect a non-literary figure.

“I respect Hema Malini… she’s a great actor and there is no doubt about that. I have acted with her too. But as a Rajya Sabha member, her performance is zero. I went through the records only to find out that she hasn’t asked even a single question in the RS. She is a daddi, buddi illa. Do you want to support such duds?” Karnad asked the legislators.

Marulasiddappa, who would compete with Hema Malini for the lone-vacant RS seat from the state in the March 3 elections, is a local literate. “He knows the problems of the state, and if he is elected to Rajya Sabha, he will fight to solve them. But if Hema is elected, the state will not be benefited. Our MLAs should apply their mind before voting,” Karnad added.

Another famous literary figure, Baragur Ramachandrappa blasted political parties for choosing to elect “outsiders” to Rajya Sabha from the state. “Earlier, the parties used to nominate prominent literary persons and artists to represent the state. But now the BJP is fielding outsiders,” he rued.

Marulasiddappa is contesting the RS polls only to “uphold Kannadigas’ pride” and he’s sure that he’ll win “conscious” votes. Meanwhile, efforts were on to propel cross-voting. It was learnt that JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy met state tourism minister J Janardhana Reddy to seek his support for Marulasiddappa.
