The police had in October last withdrawn a gunman provided to the murdered corporator Mohammed Ali alias Diwan Ali.

The gunman was withdrawn on Ali’s request, after he was accused of being involved in a Rs2-crore dacoity case in Kengeri police station limits.

Ali, who was in jail, came out of the prison on bail on May 10, 2010, to contest the BBMP polls in a JD(S) ticket. After coming out of the central prison in Parappana Agrahara, he requested the city police commissioner to provide him security.

Following his request, the police assigned his protection to a gunman, who was with Ali till October last. Though a city court had granted Ali anticipatory bail, he did not seek police protection.

Earlier while imprisoned, he refused to move bail application, fearing for his life.

Ali was involved in 36 criminal cases, and was acquitted in 22. The first case against him was registered by the Banashankari police on September 9, 1994. He was then accused of damaging the property of a Yarabnagar resident, Muneer, and also for criminal intimidation.

The second case was registered the very next day, when Ali allegedly threatened another person, Ismail Khan. Later cases were filed at Frazer Town, KS Layout, Cubbon Park, Wilson Garden, Kalasipalya, Basavanagudi, Bharathi Nagar, Ulsoor Gate, Thilaknagar and Kengeri police stations.
