Recognising diabetes as an occupational hazard for policemen—a consequence of stress, erratic work hours and disoriented lifestyle—a hospital is conducting a diabetes screening camp for the city’s law enforcers.

Columbia Asia Hospital has joined hands with Bangalore city police for the check-up. In the inauguration phase, more than 150 policemen underwent the screening at the police commissioner’s office on Thursday. In the coming days, the doctors will visit various police stations in the city to conduct the screening for the policemen who work there.

At the launch of the programme, Dr Nandakumar Jairam, chairman and group medical director of Columbia Asia Hospital , said police personnel are vulnerable to stress-related illnesses such as diabetes because of high-stress, which is a by-product of their job.

He said screening camps such as these would help the men in uniform detect and tackle the disease.

“One day, during my visit to a hospital, I saw a policeman who was rendered blind because of diabetes. The impact of diabetes is serious and concerns every citizen and we policemen are not any different. We go through a lot of stress at workplace,” said additional commissioner of police, U Nisar Ahmed.

The hospital’s initiative will provide the police personnel with comprehensive screening, treatment and consultation. Depending on the outcome and the data collected, the hospital may compile a report and give it to the police department later.

On the occasion, Columbia Asia Hospital also announced the launch of its comprehensive diabetes management programme—Life Unlimited: Diabetes Prevention and Management—for public.

It is dedicated to providing end-to-end solutions for all diabetic and pre-diabetic patients. The programme is being conducted in phases. The first phase will cover north Bangalore , i.e. more than 16 police stations, in the coming weeks.
