Experts suggested that students should finish or wind up their preparations by the third week of October. Some of the useful expert tips which students can follow include accuracy in giving answers and maintaining speed.

“The CAT website says the total number of questions would be in the range 60 to 70. So, students need to focus on answering the questions accurately, instead of solving them with speed,” said Srinivas Belvi, a teacher who specialises in coaching CAT aspirants.

“Make it a point to go through the past CAT questions. Questions till CAT 2008 are in the public domain. Previous years’ questions were earlier published in the CAT brochures. Whether CAT repeats what it did last year of including past CAT questions in the papers, solving the past CAT questions will give a fairly good idea of the paper,” said Shiv Kumar, director, Academics, Career Launcher, a coaching institute. “Going by what we witnessed last year, one can be fairly certain that the papers won’t be tough,” Kumar added.

On the kind of questions, experts said that students could expect simple basic concepts in Quant (quantitative evaluation, consisting of basic mathematics), with a bit of application. They felt that the quantitative questions were likely to be based on logic and are simple to solve, without the application of ‘complicated’ theory.
A total of 15,000 students wrote CAT 2009 in Bangalore. This year, the experts felt,  the figures might remain the same or go up by 10%. “The number of people sitting for CAT from here will be same as last year. However, a 10% rise is likely.” Kumar said.

Namrata Goenka, a CAT aspirant, said  she had been  preparing for the test for 12 months after her graduation.

“It has been my dream to study in one of the IIMs. I want to start my own business entity, and before that I want to hone my skills in one of India’s best B-schools,” she said.

“The nearly month-long window period will give students a chance to pick up the date of their choice,” she added.
