The second year pre-university students have started counting the days for their final exams which begin from March 17.

Over six lakh students are appearing for the exams in 933 examination centres spread across the state. The examinations begin with Chemistry and Business Studies considered as the easiest subjects by students.

“Compared to Physics and Mathematics, we feel Chemistry is easier. We hope we get an easy paper,” said Anumeha, a student of Sheshadripurm PU College.

The pre-university education department is making arrangements for the smooth conduct of the exams. “Compared to previous year, there has been a slight increase in the number of exam centres. Against 907 centres last year, this year we have 933 centres. We have already set up squads and provided instructions to them,” said an official of the department.

Apart from conducting the exams smoothly, the department also aims to increase the overall pass percentage this year. In 2010 March/April exams, the overall pass percentage was just 49.27%.

“We expect our students to perform better this time to reach the overall percentage of at least 60,” said the official.

Compared to the previous year, the number of candidates appearing for the exams has decreased this time. Last year, the total number of students who took the exams was 6,52,665 whereas this year, it is only 6,24,225.  “This fall is mainly because the number of repeaters and private candidates is less this year,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the department has decided to keep an eye on those who may try to do malpractices.

“We will not allow anyone to indulge in malpractices. We have made necessary arrangements for that. We request students not to indulge in such activities,” the official added.
