He was just 7, and kept asking his father what it could be like to commit suicide. But the father, a cab driver named Subramani, ignored the child’s disturbed queries without realising that he would actually try it out on Monday morning – with deadly result.

What the father also may not have realised was that his son, S Karthik, was emotionally influenced by watching his uncle hang himself to death in his house six months ago; and then, by recently seeing the body of his school’s mid-day meal cook who hanged herself at her residence.

This was enough for the 2nd Std boy from Nelamangala Government Primary School, who was already smitten by crime serials which he regularly watched with his parents – to try hanging himself by using his trouser belt in his classroom on Monday. That extreme action claimed his life on Tuesday morning after he failed to respond to medical treatment to revive him.

The police said Karthik did not attend Monday morning’s prayer assembly in his school; instead he made his way straight to his classroom. With the teacher and his classmates attending the prayer assembly, Karthik tied his trouser belt to the window grill and hanged himself.

Few minutes later, when his classmates and teacher entered the classroom, they found Karthik unconscious, hanging by his belt tied to the window grill.

Shocked teachers rushed the boy to nearby Matrushree Hospital in Nelamangala to revive him, but it failed to revive him. The child breathed his last early Tuesday morning. So shocked were the schoolteachers that one of them fainted on seeing Karthik hanging by his belt. She, too, had to be admitted to a nearby hospital.

Karthik was the eldest son of Subramani and housewife Parimala.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Karthik had suffered an emotional shock when he witnessed his uncle, Ravi Kumar, an electrician, commit suicide by hanging in his house six months ago following a family dispute.

Shockingly, Karthik’s teachers has taken him and his classmates to their school’s mid-day meal cook, Usha’s house after they were informed that she had committed suicide by hanging following a family dispute.

It is yet to be verified why the school teachers took the children to see the body of their school cook without considering the emotional impact it could have on the youngsters.

The police feel Karthik could have taken the extreme step to experiment what it felt like to be hanged after having a ringside view of two suicides within the past six months.

“We have registered a case about the incident and investigating it to know the precise reason why Karthik may have taken the extreme step,” said S Prakash, Circle Inspector, Nelamangala.

“His parents say the boy had witnessed his own uncle committing suicide six months ago. They say the boy spoke about hanging since the past three days. He also used to watch crime bulletins on TV. We are yet ascertain the reason behind his extreme step.”
