With cutthroat competition for medical entrance exams getting fiercer every year, it seems that candidates go to any extreme to secure an admission in the colleges they prefer to study.

In an incident that must have shamed the medical
education department, few candidates cheated during the entrance exam and that too with the invigilators’ consent.
On January 30, 600 students appeared for the entrance test conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Science (RGIMS) for the medical post-graduation course, in Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science (VIMS) in Bellary. VIMS, affiliated to RGIMS, was one of the venue for the examination.

“The worst part is that VIMS officials had arranged an exam room where only their wives and relatives were made to sit and write the exam. After the question papers were distributed, the room was closed and the candidates were given answer materials,” a source said.

Medical education minister Dr Ramdas, on Saturday, withheld the results of the candidates. The minister also directed the authorities to take criminal action against officials at the
institution.

According to the source, six ranks out of the top-10 scorers were of the candidates who had written the exam in the room.
More than 20 candidates, who wrote exam in the room, had secured top marks and were ‘eligible’ for the course.

One candidate, who is the wife of a VIMS doctor and had a rank of 6,500 in her previous attempt, was a top-scorer this time.
Rajiv Gandhi University vice-chancellor, on February 26, held a probe and eight officers, including VIMS professor Dr A Srinivas Murthy, were subjected to an inquest, regarding the allegations.
However, Srinivas Murthy denied the charges during
the investigation and had reportedly told the vice-chancellor that he was not involved in any malpractice.
