There’s rising consciousness about the need to reduce one’s carbon footprints. At the Energy and Power India 2011 exhibition which was inaugurated at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, Tumkur Road, on Friday, some simple solutions to help reduce energy consumption were offered.

Here are some simple ways to consume less energy: The refrigerator at home consumes about 20% of household electricity.

By simply setting the temperature to about 27 degrees and of the freezer to close to three degrees, you can save energy and reduce the carbon footprint.

Similarly, by painting the inner walls and ceiling of your house with light colour, you could save up to 2.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Planting trees can also reduce the carbon footprint.

Insulating the walls and ceiling could help reduce the electricity bill and also help you depend less on artificial cooling systems.

Several such methods were on display at the exhibition, where green lighting, green roof tops and green houses are on display.
Inaugurated on Friday, this four-day exhibition and seminar will also deal with technological advancement in the electrical equipment industry. It will also see discussion on the safety of electrical devices. Shamim Banu, additional chief secretary, department of energy, said, “This is a platform for us to know how technological developments in this sector can help us evolve the system, go green, and encourage consumers to use green energy and save carbon points.”

India is the sixth largest energy consuming country, and demand is set to rise. Even the electrical equipment industry in the country is expected to grow by nearly six times.
