The opposition Congress on Wednesday slammed chief minister BS Yeddyurappa for not taking any action, based on the Central Empower Committee (CEC) report, against illegal miners, and reiterated its demand to hand over the illegal mining issue to the CBI for further inquiry

Addressing a joint press meet in Delhi, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwar and opposition leader Siddaramaiah alleged that the chief minister is also in collusion with mine owners and that is why he is not taking any action against them.

“Though several allegations made against Yeddyurappa have been proved, still the BJP high command has not taken any action against him. This shows that BJP is supporting corruption, nepotism and favouritism in the administration,” said Parameshwar.

“Yeddyurappa himself had accepted on the floor of the house that  1.5 crore lakh metric tonne iron ore worth `5,000 crore has been exported illegally, after he became the chief minister. Between 2003 and 2010, `50,000-crore worth iron ore has been exported illegally causing a huge loss to the state exchequer. The ruling BJP had miserably failed in tackling illegal mining,” alleged Siddaramaiah.

He further said that no action had been initiated till now based on the interim report submitted by Lokayukta justice N Santosh Hegde on December 8, 2008, about illegal mining activities in the state. “Now, after the CEC submitted its report to the apex court and recommended suspension of mining leases and initiate action against erring officers, the government is hesitating to act based on report,” he said.
