Bangalore would witness intense political activity with All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi and state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan arriving in the city on Wednesday.

While Rahul has a wider agenda of strengthening his party’s youth wing, Pradhan’s visit is confined to pacifying bickering leaders of the ruling BJP.

Rahul will reach Hubli by a helicopter on Wednesday morning, before flying to Bijapur to address Youth Congress members at 11 am. He will also address Youth Congress members in Udupi and reach Bangalore by a special aircraft at 4 pm.

“In Bangalore, he is expected to interact with about 5,000 members at the Palace Grounds. He will later address Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office-bearers, executive committee members, senior leaders and party corporators at the venue,” said G Parameshwar, president, KPCC.

The Youth Congress is conducting a membership drive in the state till April 25 after which the party will hold booth-level office-bearers’ election. It will be followed by polls to the Youth Congress at assembly constituency and Lok Sabha levels, said Parameshwar.

Several Congress leaders are planning to meet Rahul separately and inform him about the developments and dissent in the party over the selection of new office-bearers to the KPCC. A section of the Youth Congress will also meet Rahul to express their resentment after being ignored by frontal organisations of the party.

Meanwhile, Pradhan is also coming to the city to broker peace between chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and dissidents. He will meet party MLAs individually at a resort on the outskirts of the city and collect their opinion about Yeddyurappa’s style of functioning. Many party MLAs have been airing their dissatisfaction over the chief minister’s style of functioning.

He will also hold separate meetings with party seniors and ministers. The BJP has sent communique to all its MLAs to meet Pradhan and express their views.

Pradhan will continue talks with party leaders on Thursday. He is also likely to meet some senior leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and seek their remarks on the performance of the BJP government.

The BJP government will complete three years of assuming power in the state on May 30. During Pradhan’s visit, the issue of conducting anniversary celebration would also come up for discussion.
