A surprise inspection of a few parks, carried out by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara (BBMP) standing committee on horticulture, including chairman K Ranganna, brought to fore the sorry state of the parks in the city.

The parks, meant for the recreation of citizens, are instead used for illegal activities in the night. As if this is not enough, some are not even open for morning walks.

Even shocking is the fact that at the Silver Jubilee Park (SJP), located just half-a-kilometre from the BBMP head office, a heap of used condoms was found.

The park is closed for morning walkers, though the information board states it is open from 5 am to 9 am.  The condition at the nearby smaller SJP was found to be no better.

The caretaker of the park said he had been instructed by the contractor not to open the park for anybody, except him and BBMP officials as the park can be misused by people. There is no proper power or water supply in the park.

Corporator P Dhanaraj said the matter was brought to the notice of Ranganna and other officials many a times. He claimed that the contractor never paid heed to his words.
