All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has rejected the state government’s plea seeking cancellation of the change in the eligibility cap for engineering courses that crashed the dreams of over 10,000 students in Karnataka. But the good news is that it has altered the eligibility criterion to make Computer Science and Electronics students eligible for engineering seats.

As many as 969 students would benefit through it, state higher education minister VS Acharya said.

This year, 60,543 CET candidates were eligible for engineering seats, against the 71,639 last year. That is because AICTE revised the eligibility slab for aggregate marks in Science subjects from 45% to 50%. This is when the not-so-popular colleges are struggling with vacant seats.  After the latest change in eligibility norms, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has started preparing a rank list that will be uploaded on its website on Friday morning — www.kea.kar.nic.in.

“About 969 more ranks will be allotted because the AICTE now allows even the Electronics and Computer Science students to take up engineering courses,” Acharya said on Thursday.

Earlier, the AICTE had directed not to consider these subjects while preparing the rank list. KEA used to consider only Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to prepare the engineering rank list for CET counselling. Now, 61,512 CET students would be eligible for engineering seats in the state.

5% supernumerary quota
From this year, the AICTE has directed all engineering colleges to provide 5% reservation to poor students under the supernumerary quota. That 5% is on the overall intake.

To admit students under this quota, the engineering colleges need not seek the approval of AICTE, as it was the norm earlier, and it is 0% fees for students who get admitted under the supernumerary quota. KEA would fill those seats under this quota.

On the scheme, Acharya said: “We will prepare a list of meritorious students whose family income is less than ¤2.5 lakh and they will be let to choose seats under this 5% quota.”

Engineering seat aspirants could submit their family income certificates while attending the CET counselling that begins from July 7 to avail seats under supernumerary quota.

Acharya clarified that there will not be a special round of counselling for supernumerary quota and that it would be done along with general counselling.
