It was an act of high-handedness on the part of traffic police, and it invited the ire of others present at the spot. On Tuesday, at the Hebbal Flyover, near the BEL Circle Road, police interceptors noticed that one motorcyclist had been speeding, at over 80 km per hour. Policemen stopped the man riding the motorcycle, but he attempted to escape.

Policemen chased the man and dragged him by the collar of his shirt. He fell off and sustained injuries. Instead of being concerned about the man’s wounds, policemen were seen hurling abuses at him.

“I was riding behind the motorcyclist who was stopped by the police. He did not stop his vehicle, that is true, but when the interceptor noticed him, he slowed down. The policemen, instead of booking him for over-speeding and imposing a fine, pulled him off the vehicle and abused him. The man was bleeding. There were some 10 people gathered at the spot at the time. We questioned the behaviour of the police. That seemed to give the policemen a scare, and they got into their jeep. We rushed the man to hospital,” said Ganesh R, who witnessed the scene, adding that there was a sub-inspector of the traffic police and three constables at the spot.

Angry commuters who had witnessed the scene threw stones at the police jeep. The traffic policemen messaged the Kodigehalli law and order police, who rushed to the spot and lathicharged members of the public who assaulted the traffic police. The men involved in the assault were tied to a tree and beaten as punishment.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) HS Revanna, said that the policemen were attached to the Yeshwanthpur traffic police station. They had recorded that the motorcyclist was riding at over 80 km per hour. A case has been registered against the people who assaulted the traffic policemen at the Jalahalli police station. Five persons have been arrested, and an investigation is on.
