To fill up undergraduate engineering seats lying vacant every year, the Consortium of Medical Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (Comed-K) is coming up with a strategy, likely to be implemented in the next academic year.

According to Comed-K officials, in the ongoing engineering counselling, about 12,000 seats have been left vacant in the first round. By November or December, Comed-K will frame a strategy for filling all the engineering seats.

For this, Comed-K plans a Centralised Placement Support Service (CPSS) through which students can have an opportunity to participate in placement directly.

“With the existing system, most colleges do not get the opportunity to organise campus placements. That is one of the reasons for students not opting for colleges in rural areas,” said a Comed-K official.

The idea of CPSS is to organise centralised placements at division level. For example, Comed-K will collect data of eligible students from all colleges and communicate the same to corporate companies.

“In some colleges, the number of eligible students for placement would be restricted to ten or less than that. But companies will not go to colleges when the number of students is less. So we are planning this support system through which division-wise placements can be conducted, where students from nearby districts can participate,” said AS Srikanth, chief executive, Comed-K.

“As of now, placements are college-centric; we want it to be student-centric. So, we will collect data of eligible students from all engineering colleges based on the requirement of the corporate,” said Srikanth.

Comed-K will shortly have a meeting with all engineering colleges after the completion of the second round of counselling. “Once the idea is placed before the college managements, it would be helpful to finalise the strategy,” he said.

Students’ opinion counts
Comed-K is collecting information from students by setting 10 parameters. Students have been asked to answer questions, such as the basis of selecting a particular college, ideal fee for engineering courses, etc.

“It is a kind of survey where we can collect students’ opinions, which will help us set a strategy later,” said Srikanth.
