The state government has decided to upgrade the syllabus for pre-university and school education to make it on a par with the Central Board of Secondary Education syllabus in central schools. This follows the Union government’s decision to introduce national common entrance tests for medical, engineering and other professional courses.

The syllabus for the PU first-year course in science will be upgraded to CBSE level from the coming academic year (2012-13). The syllabus for classes V and VIII will also be raised to CBSE standards from 2012-13. The upgrade would be extended from Class I to Class X from 2013-14, said primary and secondary education minister Visveshwara Hegde Kageri.

A bridge course will be conducted for those who pass SSLC this year, to equip them to cope with the CBSE syllabus in first-year PU from the next academic year. PU teachers too will receive special training to prepare them to teach the new syllabus.

The decision comes after the Karnataka government accepted the proposed common National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to medical courses in government and private colleges throughout India from 2014.

Over 1.56 lakh science-stream students appear for the Common Entrance Test in the state. Of these, more than 90 per cent students study the state syllabus; only about 4,000 study the CBSE or Indian School Certificate syllabus. The state government wants to ensure that the curriculum in state schools and PU colleges is brought on a par with the central syllabus before national-level common entrance tests are introduced.

Kageri also said that Bangalore would soon get a high-security printing press exclusively for printing confidential documents and letters at Peenya.
