The CBI, which is investigating cases of illegal mining by former minister G Janardhana Reddy, on Monday, started interrogation of Mehfuz Ali Khan, 29.

Khan, who was Reddy’s personal assistant, has been lodged in Parappana Agrahara central jail after he surrendered on March 2.

Khan’s friendship with Suresh Babu helped him to become a close associate of Reddy after Babu became Kampli MLA. Khan was allegedly hiding in Dubai and there were rumours that he had died.

However, CBI officials, who tapped the phones of his wife, relatives and friends, confirmed that he was alive.

Khan, whose laptop contained details of Reddy’s operations, became one of the CBI’s 150 most-wanted in November 2011.

Khan was taken to the CBI office in Gangenahalli after a medical check-up on Monday.

The CBI interrogated him for one hour.

The CBI also collected information of illegal mining conducted by Associated Mining Company (AMC) from Reddy, who may be taken to Bellary any time.
