The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday filed a detailed chargesheet on illegal mining activities carried out by former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy-owned Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC).

The chargesheet — about 180-page strong along with evidence and annexures packed in 10 metal boxes — was submitted to the special judge for CBI cases in Hyderabad on Saturday  — two days before the deadline.

Reddy and his brother-in-law BV Srinivas Reddy — the managing director of the mining company and the main accused in the case — were picked up from Bellary on September 5, 2011.

Besides, the CBI also arrested Rajagopal, former mines director for the Andhra Pradesh government. A 1988-batch IAS officer, Y Srilakshmi was also arrested for allegedly aiding the Reddys.

However, the CBI did not include her name in the chargesheet for various reasons, including the pending approval from the government for indicting her.

The chargesheet reportedly said the Reddys had carried out large-scale illegal mining operations, including trespassing into mines that did not belong to them. The CBI also explained how evidence were gathered against the Reddys and OMC using satellite imagery and state-of-the-art forensic technologies.

The trio were booked under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) r/w 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of Indian Penal Code; Section 13(2) r/w 13 (1) (d) (criminal misconduct) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
