Manchanabele Dam, the famous tourist spot situated about 45 kilometres from Bangalore, was witness to yet another case of drowning when two engineering students, out on a picnic to the venue, drowned when their coracle capsized on Wednesday.

The two students, identified as Nagesh and Darshan, both aged 23, were part of seven-member team which had gone to Manchanabele for an outing. They were fifth semester engineering students of Reva Institute of Technology and Management in Kattigenhalli near Yelahanka.

The seven students travelled on their bikes and reached the dam around 4 pm on Wednesday. Around 5 pm, four of them — Nagesh, Darshan, Uday Kumar and Naveen Kumar — got hold of the coracle, left unattended by fishermen.

After reaching a distance, Nagesh, who was not adept at swimming, dived into the waters for a swim. The coracle capsized soon, resulting in the drowning of Nagesh and Darshan. Uday and Naveen, who knew swimming, survived the tragedy and were able to reach the shore.

Nagesh, a native of Channapattana, was staying at his sister’s house in Byadarahalli near Tavarekere. Chikmagalur native Darshan was a boarder in his college hostel.

The five friends of the deceased informed Tavarekere police about the incident around 6.45 pm. The operation to fish out the bodies, which started around 7.30 pm, did not bear result till Thursday morning.

The rescue team from fire and emergency department reached the dam on Thursday morning and the search operation started around 6.30 am. Nagesh’s body was fished out around 1.30 pm, but that of Darshan could not be traced till the evening.

Nagesh’s body was shifted to Rajarajeshwari Hospital on Mysore Road for post-mortem before it was handed over to the family. Tavarekere police have registered a case about the incident.
Manchanabele dam has been witness to at least five cases of drowning this year.

In 2010, as many as 13 cases of drowning were reported from the tourist spot.

Two BSc students, both girls,  from different colleges in the city had drowned in Manchanabele Dam on July 14. The girls were part of a group which had bunked classes to go on the jolly trip.
On March 2, an engineering student drowned while he and his three friends were swimming in Manchanabele Dam. His body was fished out the next day.
