Opposition leader in the BBMP council, M Udayshankar, pooh-poohed the arrest of an engineer by the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) in connection with the bogus bill scam. On Friday, he asked why a Gandhinagar official was selectively detained in a case that also covered two other divisions.

“The BJP is playing politics in the investigation too.
They have detained an engineer from Gandhinagar constituency, which belongs to Congress party, and left out Rajarajeshwarinagar and Malleswaram, which has BJP corporators”, he said.

He said the CCTV footage of the fire incident given to the police for investigation was doctored. “There is a ‘censor board’ in the BBMP, which has doctored the video footage,” he said. He also asked why BBMP deputy mayor S Harish and BJP leader BR Nanjundappa conducted a press conference on Friday when the mayor was still in town.

At the press conference, Harish said the burnt files were related to the scams that had taken place during the Congress’s rule.
The fire was engineered by the Congress to bury the scams and close the earlier investigation, he said.

On the opposition’s demand for CBI inquiry into the `1,539-crore scam, he said that on November 29, the council would decide on whom to hand over the investigation.

“The council, which is supreme, will decide on   whether the investigation should be handed over to the Lokayukta or CBI.  The council meeting will be attended by all legislators,” he said.
On steps to beef up security to prevent accidents, he said the BBMP would spend `2 crore for raising the height of the compound wall to 10 feet. CCTV cameras with night vision will be installed at all entry and exit points.  Security personnel would be posted at vantage points.

All files would be digitised, he added. Nanjundappa alleged that BBMP commissioner Siddaiah had violated the KMC Act, 1976, as he did not take the mayor’s or council’s permission before handing over the investigation to BMTF.

“The ruling BJP will punish the guilty and not succumb to any pressure”, he said.
