In order to prevent cheating on attendance by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) employees, the standing committee on Personnel and Administrative Reforms on Wednesday recommended the installation of biometric attendance systems at all eight Palike zones.

This decision was taken after the committee conducted surprise inspections at East and Dasarahalli zones. According to the standing committee chairman Lakshmikanth Reddy, the biometric system of registering attendance was recommended as employees would not need to sign attendance registers anymore.

During an inspection at Mayo Hall on December 2, the committee found that only 10% of employees had signed the attendance register by 10.30 am. By 11.30 am, 30% attendance was recorded.

The total number of employees at Mayo Hall was 358, but only 96 personnel had come to work in the morning that day. Most of the missing employees belonged to Group C and D cadre, mainly clerks and lower-rung officers.

On Wednesday, at the Dasarahalli zone, the committee members found that only 4% of the staff had arrived on time. Only 38 of the 68 employees had signed the register till 11.45 am. The rest did not sign at all that day. Reddy said there were even four employees who signed the attendance register the previous day.

The committee issued notices to the missing officials and late-comers.
