The Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Technical Educational Institutions, Medical Educational Institutions and Universities Bill, 2010, will be placed before parliament soon.

The parliamentary standing committee, headed by member of parliament Oscar Fernandes, which was appointed to collect opinion from stake holders, has now started visiting all states.

The committee was in Karnataka recently to discuss the bill. The responsibility for organising the meeting was given to Bangalore University.

Vice-chancellors from 10 state universities, former vice-chancellors and representatives from deemed universities and private engineering and medical colleges were present at the meeting, besides student representatives.

Sources indicate that the standing committee hopes to present its report during the next session of parliament. “The committee was pleased with the presentation made by student representatives,” said a representative of private educational institutions who was at the meeting.

Student representatives at the meeting highlighted issues like capitation fees. “Four interactive sessions were held, and students spoke at the first session. Vice-chancellors and representatives of private institutions made presentations in the second session, while the third session saw education experts expressing their opinion. The last session was dedicated to hearing the government officials,” said a source from the education epartment.

Besides Fernandes, there were 13 members of parliament at the meeting. The committee members had also visited Kerala and Tamil Nadu before the meeting in Karnataka.
