Schoolchildren may soon find the examination season less stressful. At a recent meeting of central and state education regulatory institutions, the central department of school education and literacy announced its resolve to ensure that the stress-levels of students during the examination was brought down.

The department has proposed a series of measures to reduce the psychological pressure on children and their parents, especially in case of class 10 and 12 examinations. One important measure proposes to change the character of question papers.

According to officials from the state education department who were present in the meeting, the department proposed to get the question papers focus on creative abilities and encouraging transparency and internal assessment.

“It was specifically suggested that the question paper type should be changed so that reasoning and creative abilities replaced memorisation as the basis of evaluation. It was also proposed to integrate examinations with classroom life by encouraging transparency and internal assessment,” said an official.

The department also proposed to reduce stress levels during pre-board exams. “Currently, class 1 students too are facing a lot of pressure from both their parents and school authorities. This was also discussed in the meeting and the officials affirmed that stress-levels during pre-board exams too should be reduced,” the official disclosed.

The discussions also deliberated strategies to enable children to opt for different levels of attainment instead of the current classification of results into ‘pass’ and ‘fail’ categories.

Another senior official from the state department of public instructions said, “We have already changed the question paper pattern at class 10 level.  Even if the Centre suggests any changes, the decision making authority vests with the state. If we find the suggestions worthy enough, we can adopt them.”
