The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) demolished 21 houses behind the Mantri Square mall at Jaibheemnagar slum on Tuesday. The demolition began at 7am and continued till 11am.

Shattered, the residents staged a protest against the BBMP authorities. They said they had been staying here for almost 10 years. It took more than 100 police personnel, including two KSRP platoons and BMTF men, to bring the situation under control.

BBMP engineer-in-chief BT Ramesh said that over the past one year, BBMP and BMRCL had been issuing notices to the residents asking them to vacate. “Last week, the BBMP issued fresh notices to the residents, but they did not vacate. So we had to evict them and demolish their houses,” he said.

The demolition was conducted on the directive of a high-power committee headed by the chief secretary.  Earlier, there were 103 houses in that place. BMRCL acquired the land through Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) for the Metro station and 82 houses had to be razed. The residents were rehabilitated by the BMRCL at Jalahalli near Peenya and Sunkadakatte. But these 21 house residents did not oblige even after repeated notices from the BBMP. So, it had to demolish the houses in the 20,000 sq ft land worth Rs20 crore.

The residents would be rehabilitated in Sunkadakatte which was built by BMRCL. “Each duplex has been constructed at Rs14 lakh. But the residents are requesting for another floor for those who have big families. We have assured them that BBMP will consider their request by constructing another floor at Rs3 lakh,” he said.

The BBMP has fenced the area. With the help of 21 trucks, it shifted all the household items to the houses allotted to the residents in Sunkadakatte.  Karnataka Dr BR Ambedkar Horata Vedike president N Kenchalaiah said the BBMP along with the police force came at 5 am and removed the household items and started demolition. “Last week, we filed a petition in the high court contesting the demolition notice from the BBMP. The hearing is on Tuesday,” he said.
