“Whenever there is a scam in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), it is followed by a fire incident and all the related files are lost. What do you say about such incidents?” This was the question shot by a journalism student to the BBMP chief MK Shankarlinge Gowda during an interactive session on Saturday.

The interaction with college students was organised by the department of journalism of The National Degree College after Gowda gave lecture on ‘Civic sense’. A student, Surya Prakash, questioned the commissioner on how the BBMP could fail to protect important files, which often get gutted in fire incidents and the later the matter gets closed, stating that it was an accident.

“Why cannot the BBMP feed the data in the computer, which is safer?” he questioned.

The commissioner seemed amused by the query. “Even computers will get burnt during the fire accidents. We are digitising all the files and storing them in computers,” he said.
The same student also raised the issue of the BBMP’s delay in recruiting the pourakarmikas for cleaning the streets.

“Commissioners have come and gone, but failed to keep their promise of recruiting the civic workers,” he said.

Replying to this query, Gowda said the BBMP was outsourcing the pourakarmikas to meet the demand. They are also in the process of recruiting permanent pourakarmikas for the BBMP.

Another student, Divya Hegde, asked about the lack of interest among the civic bodies in maintaining the surroundings in and around historical monuments like the Tipu fort in the city. The BBMP commissioner noted the point and said tree parks needed to be developed.

Earlier, while delivering his lecture, Gowda spoke on how students should mould themselves towards becoming better citizens. “We have to try to be somebody and to do so, we have to bring changes in ourselves,” he said.

“You are living in the best of times. There are opportunities for everybody,” he told the students.

The BBMP chief also released a college book ‘Darpana’ on the occasion. College principal prof S Jayashima, and others were present.
