Children at the Bal Bhavan on Monday.

These children have gone beyond all expectations and put themselves in danger to do a good deed.

Twelve-year-old T Sumukhi has an interesting and inspiring story to tell. On September 1, she attended a wedding in Jayanagar. She was clad in a beautiful dress and worn some gold jewellery. While the ceremony was going on, she went to use the washroom.

On her way back to the wedding hall, she was way-laid by a miscreant and held at knifepoint. The miscreant assaulted her and snatched her gold chain and bangle.

“I have never felt so scared in my life. After a 15-minute tussle, the man let me go. I immediately alerted the people by crying for help. My screams drew the attention of the other people attending the wedding and they apprehended the thief,” she said.

Similarly, last August, Sindhushri and her mother were travelling in a BMTC bus. When the bus stopped at Yeshwantpur, she saw a woman take the purse from her mother’s bag.

Once the job was done, the woman alighted from the bus and boarded another bus. Even without telling her mother, Sindhushri quickly followed the woman.  The girl stood in front of the bus and requested the driver to shut the doors.

A lady constable asked her to identify the pickpocket. Sindhushri immediately recognised the woman, who was taken into custody. The police recovered 30 stolen purses from the woman.

“I was not scared even though the thief slapped me. I, too, slapped her back,” said Sindhushri, whose ambition is to get into civil services.
