She had given up on life long back. For 57-year-old Gouri Sharma, her fourth attempt to end it proved fatal. She allegedly jumped off her building terrace in Upkar Layout in the early hours of Monday.
Gouri had been mentally ill for the past two years and was under treatment in Nimhans and Vaidehi Hospital. Earlier, she had tried to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills, thrice, but each time she was rescued as her family members rushed her to the hospital in time, police said.

Mental illness was the reason for Gouri’s extreme step, police said.

She stayed on the fourth floor of the apartment, but jumped off the terrace of the building around 5.15 am on Monday. She sustained serious injuries on her head and died on the spot.  Gouri, a native of Bihar, lived with her husband Arjun Sharma and her son, an employee with a garments factory in Electronic city. She also has a daughter who is married.

The body was handed-over to the family after a post mortem was conducted in Victoria Hospital. A case has been registered in Whitefield police station.

Man hangs himself

In another incident, a 38-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in his house in Lingaiyyanapalya on Sunday night.
The deceased, Krushna Murthy, hanged himself to a ceiling fan in his house. Murthy, who was an alcoholic, had regular fights with his wife. She had gone to her parents’ house one-and-half month ago, and did not return even after Murthy requested her. Murthy was unemployed, but owned a building in Lingaiyyanapalya, portions of which he had let for rent.

He apparently didn’t give her money to run the house, prompting her to go to her parents’ house. Murthy, who was alone in the house on Sunday night, had consumed alcohol and might have taken the extreme step, police said.

The victim is survived by his wife and two children. The body was handed over to his family after a post mortem in Bowring Hospital. A case was registered in Ulsoor police station and the probe is on.
