Bangalore woman ends life as husband plays cricket

A 26-year-old recently-married woman allegedly committed suicide while her husband played cricket with his friends, police said on Sunday.

Relatives of Savitha, the deceased alleged that her husband Nandish had killed her over dowry. Nandish, also aged 26, has been arrested, police said.

Nandish reportedly told the police that he found his wife hanging from the roof of their rented accommodation in Chandra Layout around 9.30 pm on Saturday, when he had returned from a game of cricket.

Police said Savitha might have died between 5.30 pm and 9.30 pm. Her body was shifted to the Victoria Hospital for a post-mortem examination after her relatives’ arrival in the city from Takeri near Somavarapet, their native place.

Savitha’s relatives said her’s was a love marriage. They reportedly told the police that Nandish was given more than Rs1 lakh in cash and 70 gm of gold in June 2010, when the marriage took place. Nandish and Savitha had been colleagues in a city-based private finance company. They later worked for different firms.

The deceased’s brother, Sathish, reportedly told investigators that Nandish had been demanding Rs5 lakh more, after he come to know of her family’s income from a coffee estate. The couple lived in Hanumanthnagar before shifting to Chandra Layout.
