Bangalore University (BU) has decided against building a cycle track at its Jnana Bharathi campus to protect about 250 trees which would have been cut to make way for the infrastructure development project.

“We got to know from BBMP officials that constructing the cycle track may affect about 250 trees in the campus. We have started the Laksha Vriksha E Varsha project, under which we are planting about one lakh saplings in the campus. So, we thought it is better not to have the cycle track and save the trees,” said a university official. The setting up of the cycle track was part of a road-widening project which is scheduled to start soon.

BU vice-chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev had on October 11, 2010 written to BBMP commissioner requesting the Palike to develop the road at Jnana Bharathi campus and also the connecting roads which had traffic problems.

Following the request, BBMP standing committee on major works visited the campus on January 7 for spot inspection and decided to widen the road.

BU had agreed to the project on the condition of projecting the trees inside the campus.

The university had also asked BBMP to construct a cycle track as part of the project.

BBMP officials put the estimated cost of the project at Rs12.61 crore. BU would provide Rs1 crore for the project.

The project includes 2,400 m road from Mysore Road to Outer Ring Road near Ullal which passes through Jnana Bharathi campus and the connecting road which is 2,540 m from Bangalore University main road to Nagarabhavi Junction and the connecting road which is 500 m from Bangalore University to Mariyappanapalya.

Meanwhile, BU has not received any reply from BBMP about its request to close the road inside Jnana Bharathi campus —  from NAAC to railway und at Mysore Road from 10 pm  to  6am.
